EL PASO, Texas — The Eagles and Lady Eagles took on a large regional field Friday night at Eastwood’s fifth annual Jim Omohundro Stars & Strides, competing across three 5K races at the Eastside Sports Complex.
Pecos opened the evening in the freshman races, where the Lady Eagles recorded three finishes among the top 24.
Machinzee Crum earned the highest placement of the night for Pecos, crossing the finish line in 21st place with a time of 27:34. Brynn Sparkman followed in 23rd at 27:52, and Sarah Martinez finished one second later in 24th place.
Mackenna Crum placed 27th with a time of 29:16, while Alyssa Hernandez finished 30th in 29:59. Kailyn Lozano completed the course in 31:34 to place 37th, and Alize Lyles finished 42nd in 32:46.
Jayce Orona and Adrian Garcia represented the Eagles in the freshman boys race. Orona finished 46th in 23:32, while Garcia placed 56th with a time of 25:49.
The varsity boys closed the meet with a tight group of finishes. Only 17 seconds separated Pecos’ first four runners across the line.
Jayden Hernandez led the Eagles in 52nd place with a time of 17:21. Cody Saldana followed in 53rd at 17:25, Ronaldo Zaleta finished 59th in 17:33 and Aiden Barragan placed 61st with a time of 17:38.
Abdiel Ruvalcaba and Ian Salas also completed the varsity course for Pecos, finishing 114th and 115th with times of 18:37 and 18:40.
With every race contested over the 5K distance, the meet provided another early-season test for Pecos against runners from across West Texas and southern New Mexico. The Eagles and Lady Eagles answered with a strong showing throughout a full night of racing.
