Pecos cross country runners took on the hills of Alpine on Saturday, Sept. 12, competing at the Mountain Ramble against schools across West Texas. Four Eagles placed in the varsity boys’ top 10, highlighting a meet that included Pecos entries in varsity, junior varsity and middle school divisions.

Ronaldo Zaleta led the Eagles with a fifth-place finish in 18:25.62. Jayden Hernandez followed in sixth at 18:35.74, with Jaiden Juarez placing eighth in 19:05.27 and Aiden Barragan finishing ninth in 19:08.11. All four Pecos runners finished within 43 seconds of one another in the 44-runner field.

Mackenna Crum paced the Lady Eagles in the varsity girls’ race, placing 24th among 49 runners with a time of 16:52.40. Machinzee Crum finished 31st, followed by Brynn Sparkman in 33rd, Alyssa Hernandez in 37th and Kailyn Lozano in 46th.

In junior varsity competition, Alize Lyles placed 13th in the girls’ race, while Judah Mouser finished 11th in the boys’ race.

Ethan Sotelo added another top-10 finish for Pecos, placing ninth among 62 middle school boys with a time of 15:18.27. Ander Mendoza, Nathan Lujan and Evan Rodriguez also represented Pecos in the division.

The meet brought the Eagles and Lady Eagles to the mountainous landscape of the Big Bend region, putting their training to the test on Alpine’s hills.
