On August 17, the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah Independent School District Board of Trustees named longtime district leader Chris Henson as the lone finalist for Superintendent of Schools.
Henson has been in education for 33 year and served PBTISD for 20 years beginning his career with the district in 2006 as Athletic Director. He led Pecos Eagle Football and Athletics for 12 years before transitioning into campus administration in 2018. Henson subsequently served as an assistant principal and principal before moving into district leadership as Executive Director of Student Services in 2023.
Since April 2026, Henson has served as acting superintendent, providing leadership and continuity for the district while working alongside the Board of Trustees, district administrators, campus leaders, staff and community partners.
“Mr. Henson has dedicated two decades of service to the students, employees and families of PBTISD,” Board President AlexAndrea Zamarripa said. “Throughout his time as acting superintendent, he has demonstrated steady leadership, a strong understanding of our district and a sincere commitment to doing what is best for students. The board believes his experience, relationships and knowledge of our community make him the right person to lead PBTISD into its next chapter.”
During Henson’s career at PBTISD he oversaw programs and initiatives focused on student success, attendance, behavior, family engagement and support services. His experience working directly with students, families, teachers, coaches, campus administrators and district leaders has helped prepare him to oversee the district’s broader instructional and operational responsibilities.
“I am deeply honored to be named the lone finalist for superintendent of Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD,” Henson said. “PBTISD has been my home for 20 years, and will always be my home. I am grateful for the trust the Board of Trustees has placed in me. I have had the privilege of serving this district in several roles, and each one has strengthened my commitment to our students, staff and community. As Superintendent, I plan to keep looking forward to continue our work together, building on the progress taking place across the District and ensuring every student has the support and opportunities needed to succeed.”
Under Texas law, the Board of Trustees must provide public notice of the finalist at least 21 days before taking final action or voting on the superintendent’s employment. Following the required waiting period, the board may vote to officially employ Henson as PBTISD Superintendent of Schools.
