On January 20, the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD Board of Trustees approved Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) Package #5 for the final phase of the new Pecos High School: a state-of-the-art Competition Gym designed to elevate and empower high school athletics.

Designed as a premier competition venue, the new gymnasium will feature arena-style seating for 1,991 spectators. Creating the ultimate game-day atmosphere for volleyball and basketball competitions. The facility will also include a dedicated weight room, an athletic training room, and a signature “hype tunnel” designed to energize student-athletes as they take the court.

“This competition gym represents more than a place to play,” said Superintendent Brent Jaco. “It’s a space where school spirit, teamwork, and community come together. Our students work hard to earn the right to compete, and this facility will match their dedication by providing a safe, modern, and inspiring environment for both athletics and school-wide events.”

The Competition Gym is designed to support volleyball and both boys’ and girls’ basketball programs and to serve as a venue for pep rallies, tournaments, and large campus gatherings. Every element has been planned to enhance the student-athlete experience, from performance preparation to fan engagement.

The gym continues the district’s collaborative design approach, incorporating feedback from coaches, administrators, students, and project partners to ensure the space meets both instructional and competitive needs. As part of the comprehensive high school replacement project, the Competition Gym is slated for completion by 2028.
