board approves phs fine arts center

On July 21, the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD Board of Trustees approved Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) Package #4 for the next phase of the new Pecos High School: a state-of-the-art Fine Arts Center designed to inspire creativity and elevate student performance.

This newest facility will include a performance auditorium, an expansive band hall for our Mighty Eagle Band, a Black Box Theatre, Choir Room, art classrooms, and a dedicated prop shop. Just like with all recent PBTISD projects, this represents a major investment in the district’s long-standing commitment to student success and opportunities.

“This phase of our high school rebuild honors the heart of student expression—our fine arts programs,” said Superintendent Brent Jaco. “At PBTISD, we believe the arts are essential to a well-rounded education. Whether students find their voice through theatre, music, singing, painting, or behind-the-scenes production, these new spaces will give them the opportunity to shine. We’re proud to support the growth of every student’s talent, passion, and creative spirit.”

The new auditorium will provide seating for up to 900 guests and serve as a professional-grade venue for band concerts, plays, award ceremonies, and districtwide events. The Black Box Theatre will provide an intimate and flexible space for student-directed performances and experimental productions. Dedicated art classrooms will allow for both traditional expression through painting and pottery, and a prop shop will support the technical needs of theatre and our Pecos Eagle Band. Additionally, PBTISD will be introducing a choir program for our students who wish to raise their voices through song.

The centerpiece of this project is not just the facility—it’s the opportunity it provides. From marching band to UIL one-act plays and visual arts, PBTISD fine arts programs have long enriched the lives of students and audiences alike. GMP Package #4 ensures those traditions not only continue but flourish in a space designed for excellence.

This fine arts facility follows the same collaborative design process as previous phases of the new Pecos High School, with input from teachers, students, administrators, and VLK Architects. Every square foot has been thoughtfully planned to reflect the unique identity of Pecos High School and the future of the arts in PBTISD.

As part of the comprehensive high school replacement project, the Fine Arts Center is slated for completion by 2027. The Fine Arts Center is a key component in building a future where all students are inspired and empowered to excel—on stage, in the studio, and beyond.
