Fentanyl Awareness Week #OnePillKills

Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD is joining districts across Texas in observing Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Week, designated by Governor Greg Abbott under TEC §29.9074, to help educate students and families about the dangers of fentanyl use and the risk of overdose.

Fentanyl is a man-made, Schedule II narcotic that has reached communities of all sizes across Texas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teen overdose deaths related to fentanyl have tripled in the past two years. More than half of all overdose deaths now involve fentanyl.

This powerful opioid can be lethal even in the smallest amounts. It is often mixed with other substances—sometimes disguised as prescription medication or even candy—making it especially dangerous for unsuspecting teens.

Parents and Guardians can help protect their children by:

  • Talking openly about the dangers of fentanyl and social pressures.

  • Monitoring social media and app usage, as these are common sources of access.

  • Encouraging participation in extracurricular and community activities.

  • Knowing how to access the district’s anonymous reporting tool via the PBTISD website at Keep PBTISD Safe.

  • Seeking help if their child faces mental health challenges or signs of substance use.

Together, we can help our students make safe, informed choices and prevent tragedy before it happens.
